Here I sit, waiting for my breakfast at Great Scotts Eatery in Broomfield. The reason for bfast at 10am in Broomfield...?
I left the house early this morning to get a jump on the day with an 8am State Patrol vin inspection on 120th. That went off without a hitch (which was the last thing to go right).
After leaving the Troopers, I decided Hwy 36 was the way to head back to rhe store and so I pulled onto119th to redirect. After finding that the rural road was a dead-end, I looked for a spot to u-turn. As I had the trailer behind me, I swung wide into an empty lot to make the turn and (of course) got stuck. What to do?
Luckily, I had a set of chains in the back of the dually from an earlier unfortunate incident after which I figured I would never use them again. Joy of joys, a second use of the chains to defray the original cost! Now I'm down to only $50 per use. I'm so looking forward to halving that again but, not really.
Anyhow, I wind up getting the chains on by spinning the tires just a bit and then figure I'm back in business. I left the trailer hooked-up so as not to leave it stuck with no way to back up to it later. Going forward was not really happening so I put the truck in reverse and got great traction. Not wanting to get in deeper, I just figured I would keep the momentum and back right out onto the road. Off I go, the rig was making a funnyscraping sound though and then the brake pedal went right to the floor. Well aparently the signs behind me were hiding and chose to jump right into my rear-ward path. Upon looking under the truck, I could see a green road marker and a for sale sign. What the heck are they doing there? Now things were interesting. Not only was I semi stuck but I had a few pieces of angle iron wedged between the frozn ground and the underside of my pristine crew cab. One brake hose had been severed and the metal was wedged on all the rest of that hidden grabage that's supposed to make the truck run and drive. Going forward won't work with the bent metal acting as an anchor. Going backwards any further would no doubt destroy all the other menial stuff hanging off the bottom of the truck like the oil fiter, wiring loom, transmission case, oil pan, blah, blah, blah.
So here I am, in my Ducati jacket, on my back in the snow and mud, trying to work three pieces of cold angle iron out from underneath my truck. All I can see in my minds eye are the road crews in the next field over rolling around laughing their asses off at this idiot motorcycle guy fumbling around on the side of the road running stuff over. Putting shame to the side, I keep working and finally succeed in getting each piece ripped from the ground and thrown in the back of the truck to deal with later.
Got 'er out! Now I'm sitting on the dirt road, with seriously deminished brakes and someone elses metal mess in the back of the truck.
So how often does this happen...? 2 blocks away is Randy's Auto Service. Luckily, Randy has 4 bays, a lift large enough for the dually and the ability to fix it.
I spoke with Carole, the realtor whos sign I mashed as I have her phone number on a big piece of metal in the back of my truck. She was really nice and I told her to work up a bill for a new sign and let me know what I owe her. I also let her know that the survey pin is still in the ground where the lot marker was so at least we don't have to have that re-done.
I just finished breakfast and am going to head back over to see if the boys have my brakes working.
